Taxi Rank are a four piece alternative rock band hailing from Swansea who first released their debut single back in March, which proved to be a huge hit and showed their audience what to expect from their new EP, 'The Butterfly Effect'. If you haven't already listened to their massive first single 'Pier' and their shockingly brilliant cover of King Krule's 'Dum Surfer,' then you're missing out on some seriously good tunes.
The first song off their debut EP, titled 'The Only One,' may just be my favourite out of the five - however 'Monophobia' may just challenge it to the top spot in my opinion. As well as the electrifying guitar, the lyrics are intriguing to boot. With lines like "I switched all the lights off / To try and hide my face" capturing the audience alongside their impeccable layered instrumentals. Second up, the aptly titled Smoke & Mirrors starts off with Lukas Kelly's raw vocals alongside some astounding guitar. After that tune, they follow it up with something a little different - 'Monophobia' strikes different from the other songs on the EP. It's the little gem in an otherwise outstanding EP; it mixes things up a little and showcases a contrasting side to the Welsh four-piece.
The penultimate song on the EP, 'Handprint', starts off with a jingly, airy instrumental before leading into the husky vocals. The lyrics for this particular song are undeniably catchy, you'll find yourself singing along once you've listened to it once or twice. The best thing about this song has to be the blistering riff that ends the song and shows off all the talent within the band. Last but not least, the final song 'The Days' is what the EP was missing before. There's nothing better than an EP packed of tunes and then that one emotional song hits you out of the blue when you were least expecting it. 'The Days' is an incredibly laid-back but genius song. It pulls at your heart strings, the guitar gathering the whole song and it's essence together to round off a fantastic set of songs.
I haven't stopped listening to this EP on repeat, it reminds me of some of my favourite bands' music they're still putting out today. Taxi Rank will definitely be giving a lot of the bigger bands a run for their money, especially when they continue to release more music. Check them out for yourself and make sure you don't miss out on their future releases and what's to come! They've currently got a few tour dates on their Facebook and I'm sure they'll be announcing more soon if you can't make those ones. I'm making it a mission myself to see them live this summer, fingers crossed!
Check them out and give em a follow on Twitter and Instagram.
